Yes, we are parents. And while Gary and I love all of the fun things we do as a family, sometimes we just need a break to have a nice meal on our own, as a couple. Time to reconnect away from the kiddos so that we can unwind and have a full conversation, without interruption. Some of these restaurants we have taken our kids to, but dinner as a couple is a special, rare occurrence so we enjoy the intimacy that many of them offer. Here are a few of our favorite places to enjoy great conversation and wonderful food in Southern Oregon.
BAMBU in Medford - Candlelit tables makes this Medford hotspot the perfect place for a romantic dinner. The menu has a wide variety of Asian fusion choices but the real magic is in the specials, if you are lucky enough to grab one before they are gone. With specials like Halibut with Passionfruit Coconut Cream Sauce and Malaysian Sweet Chili Crab I always look forward to whatever Chef Adam may concoct to delight my belly. Don't forget dessert they usually have a crème brulee of some sort (cardamom is my favorite) and Banana Spring Rolls are a fantastic treat!
LARKS in Medford - The bar is cozy and every meal we have had from Mother's Day Brunch to Happy Hour to Dinner is delectable. We love to start date nights off with their Happy Hour sometimes. I usually order the bartender special for my cocktail because of the use of seasonal ingredients and then we love the Kobe Burger, Cheese Board, and their Caesar Salad. For dinner, their menu is constantly changing with the season but you can't go wrong with their Fried Chicken, Ratatouille or Steak. Every dish is beautiful and tastes amazing!
LOFT in Ashland - One of our go to spots for special occasions or just when we want a wonderful meal. Chef Jeremy cooks up wonderful soul satisfying dishes like Moules Frites (mussels), Bouillabaisse, the most amazing Duck dishes (there is usually always some sort of preparation on the menu) and if they have any preparation of Oysters on the menu, get them, you will not be disappointed. Just take a look at the menu and I am sure you will be craving their food just by the descriptions….I know I am!
ALCHEMY in Ashland - Honestly Gary and I have only been to Alchemy for their Happy Hour and Artisan Cocktails because we love it so much, but we did buy a gift certificate for my sister and her husband and Alchemy is already one of their favorites for dinner too. I highly suggest their Beef Wellington and Steak Tartare...ok, I'm starving now!
TWISTED CORK WINE BAR in Grants Pass - The Twisted Cork is a wine bar in downtown Grants Pass so if you sit by the window you get to enjoy people watching. Their restaurant itself is nice and quiet and the food is simply fantastic. Their Roasted Poblano Pepper is craveable and if they have a Duck Special, get it. I dream of the tender meat with the yummy sweet potato masa cakes and wilted kale. Such a memorable meal. I wish we lived closer because it would definitely be a regular spot for us.
OXENFRE PUBLIC HOUSE in Brookings - When we went there we actually had the kids with us. It had such a great vibe and the food was wonderful. I had the Korean Short Rib Wraps and ate every single bite. In fact, everyone enjoyed their meal. They also, had great craft cocktails. The reason I have this as a great date night spot is because they offer live music, have a pool tables as well as table shuffleboard. I can't wait for a time to go back with Gary and have some adult time!
LIQUID ASSETS in Ashland - GREAT COCKTAILS is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Liquid Assets, if you sit at the bar they can concoct a bartenders special to delight your taste buds. Their main restaurant has cushy chairs you can sit in or regular tables. Their menu is full of shareable bites like Truffled Popcorn and Poutine or decadent meals like Pan Seared Hamachi and Risotto. We love to just kick back and enjoy the beautiful art on the walls while sipping a cocktail munching on their tasty bites.
KOBE in Ashland - One of our favorite spots for years. Kobe has some of the best sushi around. We love to sit in the bar there because their bar menu is perfect bites of some their menu items including Kobe Beef Sliders, Sake Steamed Clams, and Korean Short Ribs. I always drink their Kobe Drop and my favorite sushi roll, even though it isn't on the bar menu, is the Sunshine Roll.
ELEMENTS TAPAS BAR in Medford - Great cocktails, great food! No matter how busy it is, it never really seems like it is too loud for us to hear each other talking. Their booths are nice and cozy giving an extra feel of privacy so that you can really enjoy each other’s company. Suggested menu items: Elements House Grapes, Seafood Cazuela, and their Seville Flatbread.
TRUE KITCHEN + BAR in Roseburg - Last year when Gary and I went to Roseburg for our anniversary we had our big celebration at True. From cocktails and appetizers, through dinner and the service everything was fantastic. It is not the most cozy place but the vibrant atmosphere was fun and meal was perfect. We will definitely be going back!
There are of course places that we haven't been but fully intend on putting to the test. Restaurants we will be trying in the near future: Ashland - Amuse and Coquina | Port Orford - Redfish | Brookings - Superfly Martini Bar and Grill | Grants Pass - The Vine. We can't wait to try them all out!
What are some of your favorite date night dining spots? We love to try new places so give us some suggestions!
