OREGON SHOREBIRD FESTIVAL
Sep

to Sep 22

OREGON SHOREBIRD FESTIVAL

For years people have been gathering on the Oregon coast to watch thousands of shorebirds as they migrate from their arctic breeding grounds as far south as the tip of Argentina. Some of these shorebirds will be flying more than 7,000 miles! Oregon’s estuaries are a place they stop over to rest and eat during this long journey. We invite you to be a part of this natural phenomenon at the Oregon Shorebird Festival in Charleston, Oregon.

During expertly guided trips to Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, visitors will have an excellent opportunity to view the most abundant shorebirds including Western and Least Sandpiper, Dunlin, Long-billed Dowitcher, Semipalmated Plover, and Black-bellied Plover.  The nearby South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve can provide birders interested in seeing Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Belted Kingfisher and Spotted Sandpiper.  A field trip through Coos Bay will treat visitors to Black Turnstone, Wandering Tattler, Surfbird, and Black Oystercatcher.  A five-hour guided Pelagic Trip offers the opportunity for Black-footed albatross, Parasitic Jaeger, Sabine’s Gull, Fork-tailed Stormpetrel, Sooty Shearwater, Pink-footed Shearwater, Northern Fulmar, Pomarine Jaeger, Red-necked Phalarope, and Cassin’s Auklet sightings. On Friday and Saturday evenings enjoy presentations by expert birders and naturalists from all over the world.

Pack up your binoculars and join the Cape Arago Audubon Society, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve for a weekend of birding fun and adventure.

GOODWILL RUNNING DEAD 5K

GOODWILL RUNNING DEAD 5K

Chase or be chased, you choose. Register as an individual or teams of Humans, Zombies, or Placed Zombies. Placed Zombies don’t run, they are hiding on the course to steal flags*. Humans get an advanced start on running zombies but will encounter “placed” zombies who will be coming out of hiding at various spots along the 5K course! Humans strive to keep at least one flag at the finish line to compete for Ultimate Survivor for title and prizes. Zombies are vying to grab as many flags as possible in quest to be named King of the Zombies and snatch up the top prize at the Apocalypse Party.

The Running Dead 5K is a charity event to benefit Goodwill’s job training programs in the Southern Oregon region including Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Lake counties and Siskiyou County in California.

It’s NOT a timed event, but an experience. The 5K is open to ages 9 and up. It is a non-violent, just-for-fun race. The only grabbing on the course will be for flags — for safety reasons no strollers, bikes, skateboards, or other wheeled equipment is permitted for runners.

The 5K course will culminate with the Apocalypse Party for runners, their supporters and general public at Common Block Brewing Co. The party features music, contests, prizes, food, beverages, vendors, games and contests.
