Visiting Sutherlin
Rochester Covered Bridge
If you enjoy history take a little road trip from Sutherlin to Oakland and visit the Rochester covered bridge. It’s three miles northwest of Sutherlin off of Old Hwy 99 on Rochester Road and goes over Calapooya Creek.
It was built by Floyd Frear in 1933. One of its unique features is that the windows have curved tops, four on each side of the bridge. It measures 80 feet in length and has faux decorative beams at each gable.
Local history suggest that at one time the county workers were going to burn down the bridge to make way for a newer concrete bridge but armed local residents stood guard to protect. The following day county commissioners pledged to secure and preserve it.
